Boston Surgical Society Incorporated

The Boston Surgical Society Incorporated is a nonprofit organization classified as a 501(c)(6), which functions as an association of professionals. It is dedicated to advancing the science, practice, and teaching of surgery in its various branches.

History

The Boston Surgical Society (BSS) has its roots in early 20th-century Boston. Initially, a group of senior surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital formed the Surgical Review Club. Meanwhile, in 1911, a smaller group of younger surgeons, looking for a more inclusive and dynamic platform, met to form their own organization. Initially, they considered names such as the Burrell Society or the Fenway Surgical Club but ultimately chose the Boston Surgical Society in January 1912.

However, the older group from the Surgical Review Club sought to establish a city-wide society similar to those in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago. After negotiations, in 1914, the two groups merged to form the Boston Surgical Society, Inc., with the "Inc." added to differentiate it from the earlier entity. The younger group, now renamed the Chirurgical Society of Boston, continued until its final recorded meeting in March 1920.

Mission

The BSS aims to create a continuous learning organization for surgeons in Boston and New England. It fosters an environment where members can disseminate and exchange information, enhancing patient care through professional and social interactions. Meetings are structured to include presentations of original surgical work, facilitating collaboration and mutual understanding among its members.

Activities

  • Monthly Meetings: The society holds regular meetings where surgeons share their research and experiences, promoting a platform for discussion and growth.
  • Networking Opportunities: BSS provides a forum for surgeons to connect with colleagues across different Boston hospitals, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

Governance and Structure

The BSS is governed by a council that oversees its operations and ensures the organization remains aligned with its mission. Leadership roles are filled by respected surgeons who contribute to the society's growth and development.

Membership

Membership is selective, comprising a group of esteemed surgeons from Boston and New England. The society periodically inducts new members, honoring their contributions to the field of surgery.

Status

Boston Surgical Society Incorporated is registered with the Internal Revenue Service under the EIN 46069294. It operates as a professional association, supporting the advancement of surgical practices and knowledge within its membership.
