Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust, Inc.
The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust, Inc. is a nonprofit conservation organization based in Maine, USA. Established in 1991, it aims to conserve and steward the natural and historical resources of the Rangeley Lakes Region for the benefit of current and future generations.
Mission
The organization's mission is to sustain the long-term ecological, economic, and social vitality of the Rangeley region by conserving, restoring, and stewarding its lands and waters. This mission includes practices such as sustainable forestland management, habitat restoration, and the development of recreational trails. The trust seeks to enhance the region's resilience and biodiversity while promoting community engagement with nature.
Conservation Activities
Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust has successfully conserved over 100,000 acres within the Rangeley region. Notably, their conservation efforts have also involved river restoration projects, such as reconnecting more than 10 miles of critical brook trout habitat in recent years. Additionally, the trust oversees important programs like the Headwaters Lake Protection Program, focusing on water quality monitoring and the prevention of invasive species.
Community Engagement
The trust actively engages with the local community through various initiatives. It organizes events like the annual Rangeley Birding Festival, which attracts bird enthusiasts from across Maine and beyond. This festival highlights the region's biodiversity and provides opportunities for participants to observe unique species.

The organization is led by an executive team and governed by a board of directors. It collaborates with local municipalities, state governments, non-profit organizations, landowners, and community groups to ensure the effective conservation and stewardship of the region's resources.
Environmental Focus
Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust is committed to mitigating climate change through sustainable practices in forest management and habitat conservation. By preserving large tracts of land, the organization supports efforts to protect natural habitats and maintain the integrity of ecosystems within the region.
Cultural and Recreational Promotion
Beyond conservation, the trust promotes the Rangeley Lakes Region as a destination for outdoor adventures and cultural exploration. It supports initiatives that enhance the region's appeal for tourists and residents alike, contributing to the local economy and community vitality.

Before ➡️ and after some much-needed blowdown clearing at our Hunter Cove Uplands conservation area. Thank you, trail crew! 👏👏 Explore this 172-acre property: https://rlht.org/hunter-cove-uplands/ (fb)

The ☀️ finally came out this week! Our water quality team took advantage of the nice weather, setting out on Saddleback Lake to collect samples. In the first two photos, we're looking through a view scope to get water transparency readings using a secchi disk. This tells us the clarity of the water, or how deep into the lake you can see. In the third photo, we're using a meter that tells us the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water as well as water temperature. We drop this down into the water in 1-meter increments to get a profile of the lake to the deepest depth. Pictured here: our water quality intern, Marissa Dewey, and headwaters coordinator, Sadie Gray. 💧 You can learn more about their findings and key health metrics of our regional lakes and ponds by visiting: https://rlht.org/home-rangeley-lakes/watershed-health/ (fb)
