The Freedom Trail Foundation is the non-profit organization responsible for the Freedom Trail since 1 In 1951, local journalist William Schofield helped to form the Freedom Trail in order to make Boston's historic resources more accessible to the City's residents and visitors. The Foundation promotes the Trail and the sites through its varied tours and extensive tour schedule, educational programs, and marketing and public relations efforts. The Freedom Trail Foundation Preservation Fund supports preservation, rehabilitation and capital projects for official Freedom Trail sites which help avoid, minimize or mitigate adverse effects of the elements and manmade wear and tear of precious 17th, 18th, and 19th century sites. The Foundation helps to celebrate the story of the American Revolution and Boston history and to promote the Freedom Trail as the City's premier historic, cultural, and educational resource. With over 4,000,000 Freedom Trail visitors each year, the Freedom Trail Foundation works with partners such as the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism, and the National Park Service to make the Trail accessible to residents of Boston and visitors from around the globe.
