Overview
Dixon Place/Open Channels NY, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the creative process by providing opportunities for artists to develop and showcase their work in various disciplines. It operates as a laboratory for artists, focusing on the presentation of original works in theatre, dance, music, puppetry, and visual arts.
History
Founded by Ellie Covan in 1985, Dixon Place began its journey as a salon in Covan's Paris apartment. The following year, it was re-established in her East Village living room, where it functioned as a small performance space. Over time, the venue expanded, reflecting the growth of its audience and programming. In 1991, Dixon Place moved to the Bowery, and later in 1999, it became the resident company at the Vineyard Theater on 26th Street. In 2009, Dixon Place opened its current facility, designed by Meyer + Gifford Architects, located on Chrystie Street.
Programs and Impact
Dixon Place supports a wide range of artists, from emerging to established figures, by offering a professional environment for them to develop and present new work. The organization features over 1000 creators annually and offers about 14 performances per week. Additionally, Dixon Place conducts several commissions annually, such as the Mondo Cane Commissioning Program, which supports theater, dance, and music creators.
Many notable artists have begun their careers at Dixon Place, including the Blue Man Group, John Leguizamo, Lisa Kron, and Deb Margolin. Other established artists have also showcased their experimental work here, making it a critical part of New York's experimental performance scene.
Facilities and Amenities
The current facility includes a state-of-the-art theater with lighting and sound packages, projection equipment, a grand piano, and a sprung floor. Other amenities include a mirrored rehearsal studio, a cocktail lounge with a small stage, and full technical support. The venue is physically accessible, with six public restrooms, including two that are ADA compliant.

Dixon Place has received numerous awards for its contributions to the arts community. Ellie Covan, its Artistic Director, has been awarded a Bessie Award, two Obies, a BAXten Award, and the NY Innovative Theater Foundation's Stewardship Award.
