Nikeno's Second Chances, Inc.
Nikeno's Second Chances, Inc. (NSC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership through education, animal rescue, and rehabilitation. Founded in 2006, NSC operates as an all-volunteer, foster-based organization.
Mission and Activities
The mission of NSC is to provide a second chance at life for homeless dogs by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming them into permanent, loving homes. NSC emphasizes the importance of both dog and owner education, recognizing that untrained dogs and untrained owners often lead to returned or unwanted pets. To address this, NSC offers structured training before, during, and after home placement to significantly improve the chances of successful adoptions.
Leadership and Background
NSC was founded by Gina Krehbiel, who brings over thirty years of experience in animal behavior. Gina is also the owner and operator of Clearwater Dog Training, a facility that aligns with NSC's mission by promoting educated pet ownership and providing trained pets. Inspired by her late German Shepherd Dog, Keno, Gina established NSC to make a meaningful difference in animal welfare.
Ambassador Program
Thistle, a dog rescued by NSC, serves as the organization's ambassador. Along with his brother Thatch, Thistle was once a high-kill shelter resident but found a forever home with Tom and Gina. Thistle has played a crucial role in welcoming and comforting over 1,000 animals passing through NSC.
Adoption Process
NSC offers adoptions for dogs of various ages, with adoption fees set to help cover medical care, housing, and training costs:
- Seniors (10 years and up): $425
- Dogs (6 months to 10 years): $450
- Puppies (up to 6 months): $500
All animals are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before placement. Additionally, adopters receive four weeks of integration training to ensure a smooth transition for both dogs and new owners.
Partnerships
Nikeno's Second Chances, Inc. is a partner of Best Friends Animal Society, a network that includes thousands of shelters and animal welfare groups working together to increase lifesaving for dogs and cats across the United States. This partnership supports NSC's efforts to contribute to a no-kill nation by 2025.
