Provides access to over 3000 certification-level 21st century employability skills The mission of the International Commission on Workforce Development is to produce a skilled, competitive workforce in developing countries that meets the needs of today's changing economy. In this dynamic and competitive global economy, skills acquisition and workforce development are vital for a nation to compete and to grow, particularly in an ever-changing era of economic integration and technological advances. The need for IT and workplace skills and competencies for 21st century jobs is prevalent in most developing countries. Job skills training can help underserved nations, regions and communities improve economic growth, reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. It can also help developing countries reduce high levels of youth unemployment and restore productive economies in countries emerging from conflict. Yet, quality education is not readily available in developing countries. Lack of subject matter experts, absence of correct educational tools, high cost, no accountability, no quality assurance, and inconsistent curriculum are just some of the problems that mar the education systems in the developing countries. This situation is leading to "illiterate and under-prepared" degree holders. As it is not possible to change entire educational systems or send out thousands of subject matter experts to each and every developing country, a viable alternative is the proliferation of IT and 21st century employability skills to the masses through e-learning using the Internet. However, there were three key barriers to the adoption of e-learning in the developing countries, (i) very high cost of "expert content", (ii) piracy and(iii) bad end-user experience due to low Internet bandwidth and disconnection problems in the developing countries. ICWFD has resolved ALL the above barriers through high-end technology and offers over 3000 certification level Information Technology and Professional Development courses FOR FREE to under-privileged learners via the Internet. Courses are accessible from any location in any country via a PIN based mechanism sponsored by our donors at hugely subsidized costs.

Description

International Commission on Workforce Development

The International Commission on Workforce Development (ICWFD) is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free employability skills training, particularly in developing countries.

Background and Objectives

Founded in 2002, ICWFD aims to bridge the gap between educational institutions and the dynamic needs of the labor market. It recognizes that traditional educational systems often leave graduates underprepared for real-world job demands, focusing instead on alleviating poverty and empowering women.

Programs and Initiatives

ICWFD partners with leading e-learning content providers to offer over 3,000 high-quality courses in fields such as business, information technology, and professional certifications. These courses are used by prestigious institutions like Harvard and MIT and are made available at a significantly reduced cost, sometimes even for free, thanks to donations and sponsorship programs designed for students in disadvantaged communities.

Impact and Reach

ICWFD has impacted over 3 million people, especially in G77 developing countries, by providing them with the skills needed to compete in today's workforce. It also supports individuals in disadvantaged sectors of developed economies.

Community Engagement

ICWFD encourages community involvement through corporate social responsibility programs, employee engagement initiatives, and cause marketing strategies. It invites volunteers to join its mission of promoting "21st-century employability skills for all."

Unique Features

A notable feature of ICWFD's programs is its use of special codes to access courses without needing credit cards, making it accessible from anywhere. This includes distribution via SMS, email, or co-branded gift/scratch cards, which serve both as a donation mechanism and a tool for corporate social responsibility.
