#OTD April 7, 1929 – Before Green Acres Mall, this site in Valley Stream, Long Island, NY, was home to Curtiss Field, a short-lived airport. Curtiss-Wright purchased Rogers Airport and the Reisert Farm and opened the airfield with a triangular runway layout. The airport operated as a public airport until 1933, when the Great Depression forced its closure. Aircraft production continued under Columbia Aircraft Corporation, which built planes, including the J2F Duck floatplane during WWII. In 1956, the northern portion of the former airfield was developed into Green Acres Mall, making it one of Long Island’s first open-air malls. (fb)
