Buffalo Choral Arts Society

The Buffalo Choral Arts Society (BCAS) is a nonprofit organization based in Western New York, renowned for its diverse and vibrant choral performances. Founded by Robert F. Schulz in 1965, BCAS is committed to fostering a sense of community through music, embracing singers from all walks of life.

History

BCAS was established with the vision of creating an "everyman's chorus," which aims to bring people together through their shared passion for choral music. Over the years, the society has performed at various national and international venues. Some of its notable performances include concerts at St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and the United Nations in New York City, as well as performances in Washington, D.C., Quebec City, Europe, and beyond[2].

Performances and Collaborations

Buffalo Choral Arts Society celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015 with a special season, culminating in a concert featuring world-renowned composer and conductor Dr. Z. Randall Stroope. BCAS also performed live with Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Foreigner at the Seneca Niagara Casino in 2016[2]. Additionally, the chorus was the first ever to be inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 2018[2].

Leadership

BCAS is led by David Curtis, who serves as Conductor and Music Director. He is also the Organist/Director of Music at the Oakfield United Methodist Church. Curtis has a distinguished career in music education and conducting, with numerous awards for his choral ensembles[4]. The organization's accompanist is Robert Hull, a versatile musician with experience in jazz and classical music, as well as organ performance and maintenance[4].

Mission

The Buffalo Choral Arts Society continues to enrich the community by providing affordable and high-quality choral performances. The society remains true to its founding vision of inclusivity, making choral music accessible to all segments of the community.

Legacy

For over 50 years, BCAS has been a staple of the Buffalo cultural scene, contributing to the city's vibrant arts landscape with a mix of sacred, secular, and classical choral music. Their dedication to community engagement and musical excellence has solidified their position as one of Western New York's most respected choral groups.
