Happy Birthday to Rachel Carson! Carson was one of a major triumvirate of influential 20th Century conservationists from western Pennsylvania -- Edward Abbey and Howard Zahniser (ZON-i-ser) being the other two. Where would we be without them? Also, let us not forget that U.S. Rep. John P. Saylor of Johnstown was the Wilderness Act of 1964's greatest champion in the Congress. And the Eastern Wilderness Areas Act of 1975. Without him we may not have more than 111 million acres of designated wilderness in 44 states all across the country today. (fb)

Allegheny National ForestIt must be concluded that the demand for wilderness experience on the ANF is very highgiven that half the countrys population lies within a days drive of the Forest. It seems obvious that the demand for wilderness designation on the Forest is high and theavailable supply in the regional area is low. 1986 Allegheny National Forest Landand Resource Management PlanChapter 2 page 5 Americas national forests were established in part to furnish a continuoussupply of timber for citizens of the United States. Further the 1911 WeeksAct which allowed the federal government to establish the AlleghenyNational Forest and other national forests in the eastern United Statesalso provides for the production of timber.
