Description

Discovery Museum, Inc.

Discovery Museum, Inc. is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering learning and creativity through interactive and hands-on experiences. The organization operates the Discovery Museum, a children's museum situated in Acton, Massachusetts.

Mission and Philosophy

The mission of the Discovery Museum is to inspire enduring curiosity and love of learning, emphasizing interactive discovery, hands-on inquiry, and scientific investigation. The museum believes that children are capable of incredible things and focuses on nurturing their abilities while supporting their healthy development through play and exploration in a STEAM-rich environment.

History

Founded in 1982 by Donald B. Verger, the original Children's Discovery Museum was established with a mission to engage children in learning through interactive exhibits. Over the years, the museum expanded to include a Science Discovery Museum in 1987. Following an extensive renovation and expansion, the museum reopened in March 2018 as a single, accessible building, uniting the best exhibits from both museums under one roof.

Exhibits and Programs

The Discovery Museum features a wide range of interactive exhibits that cater to children of all ages and adults. These exhibits include hands-on experiences focused on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), such as water, air, tinkering, design, engineering, early brain development, math, light, color, and sound. The museum offers re-imagined visitor favorites like the Diner, Train Room, and Ship Room, alongside other interactive components.

In addition to indoor exhibits, the museum includes Discovery Woods, an accessible outdoor nature playscape and a 550-square-foot treehouse, which provide opportunities for outdoor exploration and play year-round.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

The Discovery Museum is committed to accessibility, offering an ADA-compliant building and exhibits designed according to Universal Design principles. This ensures that the museum is usable by people of all ages and abilities. The Open Door Connections program provides opportunities for those facing financial, developmental, or cultural barriers to visit the museum. Special services include free admission for families with children on the autism spectrum, hearing or vision loss, and for military families.

Awards and Recognition

Discovery Museum has been awarded the nation's highest museum honor for its exceptional contributions to the community, reflecting its commitment to fostering learning and inclusivity.

Leadership

As of recent updates, Marie R. B. Beam serves as the CEO, with guidance from a diverse board of directors comprising professionals from various educational and corporate backgrounds.

Governance and Operations

The museum operates under a governance structure that emphasizes inclusivity and transparency, with a board that conducts regular assessments and reviews policies to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
