COMPANION ANIMAL PROGRAM INC
Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of our Cape Cod residents, serving the older and disabled population who live or participate in out-of-home, day and residential and hospital programs. Additionally we serve children and youth in library, school and college settings. We provide the enjoyment and therapeutic support of trained and certified companion animals. Pets and their owners become Therapy Teams following rigorous preparation and testing to meet safety standards of behavior and excellence in the field of pet therapy. The effects of animal assisted therapeutic activities have been well- documented and proven, including improved physical and emotional health. Therapeutic and life enhancing rewards result when volunteer Therapy Teams interact with those in need.
Companion Animal Program Inc.
Overview
Companion Animal Program Inc. (CAP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization based in Massachusetts. Founded in 1986 in Orleans, Massachusetts, by a small group of pet owners, CAP aims to improve the well-being of individuals in various settings through animal-assisted therapy.
History
The program was initiated when a group of pet owners visited a friend in a rehabilitation unit, and the positive reception from patients led to the development of a pet visiting program. Over time, CAP has evolved into an organized entity, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, with a focus on serving the entire Cape Cod area.
Mission and Activities
CAP's primary mission is to provide therapeutic visits to facilities such as schools, libraries, community colleges, hospitals, and programs for individuals with disabilities. Their visits are conducted by certified Therapy Teams consisting of pet owners and their animals, mostly dogs but also other well-behaved pets. The organization coordinates over 5,000 visits annually and relies on volunteer efforts and contributions for support.
Training and Certification
To become part of CAP, pets must first obtain the American Kennel Club's (AKC) Canine Good Citizen certificate. Following this, teams undergo CAP's specialized training and evaluation to ensure they are suitable for therapy work. This process emphasizes the safety and reliability of the Therapy Teams in various environments.
Impact
CAP's visits have been welcomed by facilities across Cape Cod, providing joy and comfort to many, especially those who have had to give up their pets. Clinically, pet-assisted therapy has been shown to help alleviate conditions such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive disorders. CAP also offers programs like "Tales to Tails," where children read stories to therapy dogs, enhancing literacy skills and emotional comfort.
Structure and Funding
As an all-volunteer organization, CAP is funded entirely by membership dues and donations. The group offers various membership options to support its mission, including individual, family, and supporting memberships. Despite having over 200 members and more than 100 active Therapy Teams, CAP continues to seek additional teams to meet the demand for visits.
Community Engagement
Beyond regular visits, CAP participates in community events and educational programs, spreading awareness about the benefits of animal-assisted therapy. Their involvement in events like charity walks and educational sessions contributes to community outreach and support.
Leadership and Operations
The organization is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors and includes various non-board leadership roles. CAP's operations are structured to ensure consistent quality in delivering their therapeutic services, maintaining a strong reputation in the field of animal-assisted therapy.
