Originally opened in 1962 as St. John's Smithtown Hospital, the institution was renamed in 1999 to honor the 14th-century Catholic saint and theologian, Catherine Benincasa. It was acquired by Catholic Health Services in February 2000 and has since been a major component of the Catholic Health system[1].
