MercyFirst

MercyFirst is a Sanctuary-certified, not-for-profit human and social service agency in the United States. Founded in 1894 by the Sisters of Mercy as an orphanage, it has evolved into a multifaceted organization providing vital services to children, teenagers, and families across the New York metropolitan area.

History and Founding

Originally established by the Sisters of Mercy, MercyFirst traces its roots to the late 1800s. The organization was formed through the merger of Angel Guardian Home in Brooklyn and St. Mary of the Angels Home in Syosset. Today, it continues to be a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, upholding their mission and values.

Mission and Values

MercyFirst's mission is to inspire hope and promote healing for children and families by providing quality human services. The organization operates under six core values: compassion, excellence, hospitality, integrity, justice, and respect. These values guide the organization in its efforts to provide a safe and healing environment for those it serves.

Services

MercyFirst offers a range of programs designed to support children and families in need. These include:

  • Short-term Residential Services: Such as those for unaccompanied migrant children.
  • Community-Based Prevention and Family Foster Care Services: Helping families facing challenges like poverty and domestic violence.
  • Group Homes: Providing community-based living arrangements for children and families within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.
  • Youth Development Programs: Focused on helping youth achieve their potential through education and skill-building.
Operations and Impact

MercyFirst serves over 3,000 individuals annually across New York City (Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island) and Long Island. The organization is accredited by the Council on Accreditation and is Sanctuary Certified, reflecting its commitment to trauma-informed practices. It also participates in federal meal programs to support its clients. Over the years, MercyFirst has positively impacted more than 400,000 lives.

Financials and Status

As a 501(c)3 organization, MercyFirst is designated for charitable purposes. Its revenue primarily comes from program services, with a significant portion dedicated to salaries and wages. The organization is recognized for its work in the human services sector, specifically in foster care and multipurpose human services. Donations to MercyFirst are tax deductible.
