Don't miss out on what’s to come this Saturday at our hybrid conference, "Engaging with the Legacies of Northern Slavery." Virtual and in-person tickets are available to purchase for a limited time! Grab your spot before sales close TODAY (Thursday) at noon for in-person attendance and on Saturday morning for virtual attendance. Get your tickets here: https://www.historic-deerfield.org/events/engaging-with-the-legacies-of-northern-slavery/ Here’s a glimpse of the incredible speakers: The Executive Director of Witness Stones, Pat Wilson Pheanious, J.D., M.S.W., learned late in life that she is a nineth generation descendant of people enslaved in colonial Connecticut. She will discuss the disconnect and discomfort suffered through years of public education which denigrated or ignored this rich history, and how this project documented and reclaimed eleven generations of her family's progress in America. Jerrad P. Pacatte is an Associate Research Fellow with the Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery Project at Harvard University. A historian of gender, slavery, and disability in early America and the Atlantic World, Jerrad's research and teaching interests examine the lives, labors, and emancipation experiences of enslaved women and people with disabilities in eighteenth and early-nineteenth century New England. Jerrad is completing his Ph.D. In African American Women's History at Rutgers University. Jerrad's presentation will examine the history—and historiography—of New England slavery studies. Erika Slocumb, the Director of Interpretation and Visitor Experience at the Stowe Center for Literary Activism in Hartford, CT, and Ph.D. candidate of Black Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst will present, "A Constellation of Hope & Freedom: Literary Activism, A Black American Tradition.” Anika Lopes, founder and president of Ancestral Bridges Foundation Inc., will showcase her grandmother, Ella Brooks (first image), in her lecture, "From Chains to Change." Dr. Ousmane Power-Greene, professor of history at Clark University, will present, "'Discard all associations that bind [you]': Rethinking the relationship between slavery in Deep South and Western Massachusetts." Kristin Gallas, principal of MUSE Consulting, is an award-winning museum educator and author. She has collaborated with museums and historic sites to enhance their education programs and interpretive strategies. She will present, "Interpreting Slavery as Part of the 21st-Century Civil Rights Movement." (fb)
