THE CORPORATION OF HAVERFORD COLLEGE

By age 4, children already have ideas about race and gender, and those early beliefs can shape a lifetime of perception and behavior. At Haverford, Associate Professor of Psychology Ryan Lei studies how children learn to combine social categories, such as race and gender, and what that reveals about bias. With support from two grants from the National Science Foundation, Lei has explored this work in depth while also engaging more than 50 student researchers through hands-on fieldwork, data analysis, and national conference presentations.
