Can-Am Crown Organization
The Can-Am Crown Organization is a non-profit corporation located in Fort Kent, Maine. It was founded on October 16, 1992, under the laws of the State of Maine. The organization's primary mission is to preserve and promote the sport of dog sledding, fostering both national and international amateur sports competitions.
Purpose and Activities
The Can-Am Crown is best known for organizing the Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races. These races include a 30-mile, a 60-mile (though in recent years they have occasionally extended this to a 100-mile event), and a 250-mile competition, which serves as an Iditarod qualifying race. The race attracts competitors from across the United States and Canada.
History
The first Can-Am Crown race took place on February 16, 1993. Initially, the event included a 250-mile race with participants from Maine, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. In 1994, a 60-mile race was added, and by 1997, a 30-mile race was introduced. The organization established the first Saturday in March as the official start date for all races.
Over the years, the race's popularity led to a team limit in each race category. In 2005, the maximum number of teams was reached. The organization also adapted to external challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the cancellation of the 2021 race. Instead, they conducted a "Virtual Fun Run" via social media.
In 2024, the race was again cancelled due to insufficient snow conditions, prioritizing the health and safety of participants and their dogs.
Notable Events
In 2023, the race made history with female mushers claiming the top spots in all three major races. Katherine Langalais won the 250-mile race, while Florence Shaw and Diane Marquis secured victories in the other distances.
The race courses extend through the Allagash wilderness, beginning and ending in Fort Kent, Maine. Competitors must navigate challenging trails and manage their sled dog teams' endurance.
Prizes
Winners of the Can-Am Crown races receive significant prizes, with the 250-mile winner receiving $29,000, the 60-mile winner $7,000, and the 30-mile winner $4,000.
The organization relies on over 200 volunteers and numerous sponsors for the success of the races.
Overall, the Can-Am Crown Organization plays a vital role in promoting sled dog racing and fostering a community of enthusiasts across international borders.
