Women Outdoors Inc
Women Outdoors Inc is a national, nonprofit, all-volunteer organization in the United States, founded in 1980. It aims to promote wilderness activities, environmental ethics, and stewardship among women, providing a supportive environment for developing outdoor skills and leadership.
History
The organization was established following a Northeast Regional Gathering of Women in the Wilderness at Otter Lake, New Hampshire. Ten women, inspired by the connections they made during this event, decided to create a new entity dedicated to fostering leadership and outdoor skills in women, without affiliating with existing groups like Women in the Wilderness. By June 1980, these founding members had established the organization as Women Outdoors, drafted its constitution and bylaws, and incorporated it in Massachusetts. Three years later, Women Outdoors received its nonprofit (501(c)(3)) status from the Internal Revenue Service.
Mission and Activities
Women Outdoors promotes leadership, friendship, adventure, and enjoyment in the outdoors. It supports regional chapters across the United States, with the largest presence in the Northeast, where the organization was founded. These chapters organize various activities, including hiking, biking, kayaking, and cross-country skiing. The organization is inclusive, welcoming women of diverse ages, lifestyles, and cultures.
Events and Membership
Each regional chapter organizes at least one event per quarter, though many hold events monthly. Beyond chapter activities, Women Outdoors hosts an annual national Gathering, which provides members and non-members alike an opportunity to network and participate in outdoor activities. Membership benefits include access to all regional events, a members-only section on the organization's website, and eligibility for leadership training scholarships.
Partnerships
Women Outdoors collaborates with other environmental organizations to further its mission of outdoor stewardship and education. It partners with groups like Leave No Trace, the American Hiking Society, and the Appalachian Mountain Club to enhance its impact on promoting responsible outdoor practices.
Tax Status
As a 501(c)(3) organization, Women Outdoors' membership fees are tax-deductible, supporting its commitment to fostering women's outdoor activities and environmental awareness while aligning with U.S. tax laws related to charitable contributions.
Inclusivity Statement
The organization emphasizes inclusivity, providing a space where women can engage in outdoor activities regardless of their skill level or background. It encourages participation from women across different ages, races, and lifestyles, promoting a diverse and supportive community.
