With 7 USGA titles, a spot in the World Golf Hall of Fame, and an incredible 12 Curtis Cup appearances as both a player and captain, she has paved the way for future generations of women in golf. When Carol Semple Thompson was 12 years old, her mother, Phyllis Semple, employed a creative strategy to encourage her daughter’s interest in golf. She offered Carol $5 if she could break 60 for nine holes—a motivating challenge that sparked Carol’s dedication to the sport. The supportive and competitive dynamic between mother and daughter played a significant role in shaping Carol’s illustrious career. Beyond her achievements on the course, Carol embodies the values we teach at First Tee – Pittsburgh—integrity, perseverance, and respect.
