On May 10, 1775, Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga in a surprise raid, famously demanding surrender “in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress.” Though small in scale, the victory gave the Continental Army critical artillery later used to drive the British from Boston. Allen, a bold and rough-edged frontiersman from Vermont, became a symbol of grassroots revolutionary spirit—leading settlers who had long resisted distant authority. The Ticonderoga raid showed that America’s fight for independence wasn’t just led by polished statesmen, but also by hard men with little to lose and everything to fight for.
