On May 10, 1775, Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga in a surprise raid, famously demanding surrender “in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress. ” Though small in scale, the victory gave the Continental Army critical artillery later used to drive the British from Boston. Allen, a bold and rough-edged frontiersman from Vermont, became a symbol of grassroots revolutionary spirit—leading settlers who had long resisted distant authority.
