Each year, CYA hosts its Student Conference — a space for students to present original research, engage in thoughtful dialogue, and make a meaningful contribution to the scholarly life of CYA. This year's theme, Communal Belonging, Migration and Citizenship in the Ancient and Modern World, struck a chord that resonated across disciplines. Students explored how communities draw their boundaries, how narratives of “the other” are constructed, and how memory, language, and space shape our sense of who is inside and who remains outside. From the physical theater of Attic tragedy to the ideological theater of Cold War Greece, each presentation was both a discrete act of scholarship and part of a broader, urgent conversation. Adeline Hayden, a current CYA student from the University of Notre Dame, has been spending her Wednesday mornings at Pastry Family, a neighborhood bakery in Athens known for its European-style pastries, fruit tarts, ice cream cakes, and traditional Greek sweets like baklava and kataifi. Her tasks change daily — measuring ingredients, dipping chocolates, decorating cookies — but the heart of the experience lies in the structure of the work and the relationships formed in the kitchen. “I was looking to try something I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to do,” she says. “This experience has allowed me to better understand what it’s like to live and work in Athens.” At the bakery, Adeline is not just learning pastry techniques; she is observing how a local business operates, how people work together, and how culture is carried out in small, ordinary moments.
