🚨 Medical credit cards are on the rise and they’re leaving patients trapped in debt just for trying to get the care they need. In a new piece for The American Prospect, Mona Shah, Senior Director of Policy & Strategy at Community Catalyst, explains how these deferred-interest cards work and why they’re so dangerous. Too many people are being lured into predatory financing at their most vulnerable moment. As Mona says: “Had they known, [patients] would never have signed up in the first place.” This is what happens when profit comes before people. We need stronger protections and a health care system that doesn’t require a credit check just to access basic care. 📖 Read the full piece here: (fb)

Contrary to tired narratives, the majority of people want the government to play a role in reigning in the high cost of care. Our new research with HIT Strategies shows that 78% of voters support a stronger government role in lowering health care costs: That includes 89% of Democrats, 73% of Independents, and 68% of Republicans. This isn’t about party lines, it’s about people. But while families are forced to choose between medicine and groceries, Republicans in Congress have voted rushed cuts to Medicaid, all so they can continue to give tax breaks that only benefit billionaires and greedy corporations. That means gutting care for children, older adults, and people with disabilities, while corporate profits in health care soar. The message from voters is clear: enough is enough. We want a system that works for us and that puts people over profit. How do you feel about Congress giving tax breaks to the wealthy while taking health care away from those who need it the most?
