Locust Valley Historical Society
The Locust Valley Historical Society is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, conservation, and interpretation of the history of Locust Valley, New York, and surrounding areas.
History and Mission
Founded in 1983, the society focuses on the communities of Matinecock, Lattingtown, Mill Neck, and the Brookvilles. Its mission is to document and share the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region, which is part of Long Island's North Shore, often referred to as the "Gold Coast".
Collections
The society maintains a unique collection consisting of research files, scrapbooks, memorabilia, books, and ephemera related to the Locust Valley area and community. These materials are generously donated by local residents, friends, and businesses, reflecting the collective memory of the community. The collection is partially accessible online, allowing researchers to browse certain holdings.
Historical Significance of Locust Valley
Locust Valley has a significant historical background dating back to the 17th century. Originally settled by English colonists in 1667 and initially named Buckram, the area was renamed Locust Valley in 1856 due to the abundance of locust trees in the region. The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in the late 19th century contributed to the development of a commercial center, supporting the growth of estates and exclusive communities in the surrounding areas.
Community Engagement
The society plays an essential role in community engagement, preserving historical landmarks and narratives that define the character of Locust Valley. This includes the preservation of homes dating back to the 17th century, such as the Joseph Weeks, Jr. and William Hawxhurst houses, and notable private schools like Friends Academy and Portledge School. The society's activities also highlight important historical figures and events that have shaped the region's identity.
