The mission statement of the Ellen Shaw de Paredes Breast Cancer Foundation focuses on the early detection of breast cancer: ""The Foundation is committed to early detection of breast cancer through education, research, and care for the underserved."" The three-pronged approach has been adopted in the effort to fulfill this mission by educating the public, training doctors in the sub-specialty of mammography, and providing mammograms to detect breast cancers in underserved women. Women with abnormalities are provided any additional services indicated at no cost. Educating the public about breast cancer is just one of the Foundation's programs. Dr. Paredes has trained hundreds of fellows through her three decades of leadership of fellowship programs. The Paredes Foundation's Fellowship Program trains needed radiologists in the sub-specialty of breast imaging, which allows more women access to premium care. The breast health services for underserved women are accomplished through the Foundation's Free Mammography Outreach Program. The Program manages a consortium of community partners to provide free breast health care to women who otherwise might not receive it. Mammograms are the recognized first line of attack against breast cancer. They provide the means to early detection, therefore directly aligning the Outreach Program with the goal of the mission statement to improve breast cancer survival rates through early detection of breast cancers.
