Outpost Office (@outpostoffice), the Columbus-based practice led by Erik Herrmann (@erikherrmann ’19, ’25) and Ashley Bigham (@ashleymbigham ’21), has won the Small Lots, Big Impacts competition in the Gentle Density category with Growing Together—a vibrant housing vision that balances privacy, community, and adaptability. Conceived during Herrmann’s MacDowell residency, the project builds on the idea of “timefulness,” a term Outpost Office has been brought into focus in their recent work. “We’re interested in how buildings evolve over time—from construction through use and eventual transformation,” the team explains. “This project let us explore a fabric of architecture that can expand or contract with shifting needs—ideal for multigenerational living and chosen families.” As Phase 2 begins, the team looks ahead to turning ideas into action.
