Civil Air Patrol

Overview

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a congressionally chartered, federally funded nonprofit organization serving as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Founded on December 1, 1941, CAP's primary goals include youth development, aerospace education, and supporting various emergency services and humanitarian missions.

Mission

Civil Air Patrol's mission is centered on serving America's communities, saving lives, and shaping futures. The organization conducts a wide range of activities, including emergency services, aerospace education, and cadet programs. CAP is not a part of the U.S. military armed forces but operates in a supportive role for the U.S. Air Force.

Structure

CAP is organized similarly to the military, with a hierarchical structure that includes national headquarters, regions, wings, groups, squadrons, and flights. This structure enables efficient management of its extensive operations across the United States and its territories.

Missions and Activities

CAP's core activities are:

• Aerospace Education: Offering educational programs for both senior members and cadets, promoting aerospace-related STEM education.
• Cadet Programs: Providing youth development opportunities focused on leadership, character development, and aerospace education.
• Emergency Services: Conducting missions such as search and rescue, disaster relief, and humanitarian support. CAP members assist in approximately 90% of inland search and rescue missions assigned by the Air Force.

CAP also participates in non-emergency activities like counterdrug operations and homeland security support. The organization operates the world's largest fleet of single-engine aircraft for training, education, and operational missions.

Partnerships

Civil Air Patrol collaborates closely with the U.S. Air Force through CAP-USAF, which provides support and oversight for CAP programs. Additionally, CAP works with various federal agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Forest Service.

Membership and Operations

With over 38,000 adult members and more than 28,000 cadets, CAP operates in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. It is recognized as part of the Air Force's total force, contributing to national defense and community support through volunteer service.
