Overview

HALOS Incorporated is a nonprofit organization based in the United States, founded in 1997 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 2004. Its mission is to support kinship families—grandparents, other relatives, and family friends—who are raising children to prevent them from entering the foster care system. The organization is particularly active in Charleston County, South Carolina, addressing the needs of families caring for abused and neglected children.

History

The organization began as a grassroots initiative, aimed at bridging the financial gaps faced by kinship caregivers. Dr. Eve Spratt, a pediatrician and child psychiatrist, initiated HALOS after witnessing the struggles of families providing care for children with limited resources. In its first year, HALOS focused primarily on gathering essential items through partnerships with local churches, collecting goods valued at nearly $40,000.

Since its inception, HALOS has expanded significantly, formalizing its operations and establishing a wider network of community partners. The organization now receives in-kind donations worth approximately $250,000 annually, reflecting its growth and community support.

Programs and Services

HALOS provides a variety of programs aimed at supporting kinship families, including:

• Resource Provision: Supplies such as diapers, cribs, school supplies, and clothing to meet the basic needs of children in kinship care.

• Educational Workshops: Offering training and resources for caregivers to enhance their skills and knowledge in caring for children.
