🔥 Alaska’s Pension System is Broken 🔥 And the fire fighters of Alaska, the people who answer the call day and night, are paying the price. Since 2005, Alaska has forced public employees into a 401(k)-style retirement plan. The result? Skyrocketing turnover, shrinking departments, and families forced to choose between staying in the state they love or leaving for financial survival. Fire fighters, paramedics, dispatchers, teachers, and police officers continue to sound the alarm. They’re not asking for special treatment, they’re asking for a fair shot at a dignified retirement in the state they love and chose. Two bipartisan bills, HB 78 and SB 28, would give public employees a choice: the option to build a secure, stable future through a defined-benefit pension. These are people who sacrifice their bodies and their time with family for the public good. They’ve earned more than uncertainty. 📣 It’s time to fix this. Alaska is the ONLY state in the nation without a pension system for public safety. The members of Ketchikan Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2761 responded to a fire in their service area. These types of responses require a speed of response, and a clear understanding of the hazards present, for them to put together a plan, and make a successful outcome. Fortunately no civilians or firefighters were injured. The work of Alaska Professional Fire Fighters is time critical, labor intensive, and highly technical. Every populated center of our great state relies on its firefighters to provide a first line of defense for our communities.
