Laspau
Overview
Laspau, officially known as Laspau Inc., is a nonprofit organization that was affiliated with Harvard University, dedicated to enhancing higher education quality and opportunities throughout the Americas. Established in 1964 as the Latin American Scholarship Program of American Universities, Laspau focused on expanding access to higher education for individuals from Latin America and the Caribbean. The organization played a pivotal role in fostering educational programs, scholarship management, and university collaborations across the region.
Mission and Impact
Laspau’s mission centered on creating a network that connected educational institutions, scholars, and educators. Over its nearly six-decade-long history, the organization supported over 30,000 individuals and collaborated with more than 1,500 institutions. By providing scholarships and implementing programs aimed at faculty development and institutional capacity building, Laspau significantly contributed to the growth and innovation in higher education across Latin America and the Caribbean.
The organization was particularly known for its extensive network, which included around 17,000 scholars and 5,000 educators, enabling the sharing of knowledge and best practices among academic institutions. Laspau’s initiatives aimed to foster knowledge-based societies and enhance the educational landscape in the region.
Closure
On September 30, 2023, Laspau officially ceased operations following a decision by Harvard University to revoke its affiliate status. The decision was attributed to a misalignment of missions between Harvard and Laspau. The executive director of Laspau, Angélica M. Natera, noted that this change would hinder the organization’s ability to fulfill its mission of supporting higher education in the Americas. The closure marked the end of an era for a nonprofit that had been instrumental in shaping higher education opportunities in the region.
Funding and Structure
Laspau operated as a 501(c)(3) organization, allowing for tax-deductible donations. Its funding primarily derived from contributions, which constituted a significant portion of its revenue. The organization reported substantial expenses associated with program services and executive compensation.
Despite its closure, Laspau left a lasting legacy in the realm of higher education, having established a robust network of support for students, educators, and institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.
