Free & Accepted Masons of New York

Overview

The Free & Accepted Masons of New York, officially known as the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York, is a nonprofit organization and the largest and oldest Masonic institution in New York. It acts as the governing body for Masonic activities throughout the state, overseeing over 800 lodges within New York and nine in Lebanon[1].

History

The history of Freemasonry in New York extends back to the mid-1730s when Daniel Coxe Jr. was appointed as Provincial Grand Master for New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania by the Duke of Norfolk[1][3]. However, it wasn't until 1781 that the groundwork for the modern Grand Lodge of New York was laid, under the influence of the Antient Grand Lodge of England. The Grand Lodge was officially organized on December 15, 1782, and declared its independence on June 6, 1787[1][2].

Activities and Philanthropy

The organization plays a significant role in various charitable endeavors across New York State. It manages entities like the Masonic Home in Utica and supports educational initiatives such as the Livingston Masonic Library. The Grand Lodge of New York participates in numerous philanthropic activities, contributing to the welfare of both Masons and the broader community through service in public offices and charitable works[1][2].

Structure and Governance

The Grand Lodge is headed by a Grand Master, with the current Grand Master being Steven Adam Rubin[1]. The Grand Lodge has mutual recognition with the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New York, established in 2001[1]. This reflects the ongoing efforts to maintain unity and cooperation among Masonic organizations.

Cultural Significance

The Grand Lodge of New York has played a significant role in American Masonic history, with notable historical figures such as George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt having connections to New York Masonic lodges[5]. The organization continues to be a part of cultural and historical heritage in New York and beyond.
