#TBT to when Greenway's Brewery sat next to the Erie Canal in Syracuse. Brothers John and George Greenway opened their brewery in 1853. The brewery was so successful that in 1864 it was able to expand into the iconic canalside facility many are familiar with, a city block long, seven stories high, and with a stately French style roof. This new facility could accommodate production of approximately 50,000 barrels of beer annually, one of the largest breweries in New York, with Greenway’s English heritage reflected in their production of primarily ales, porters, and stouts. Greenway even had his own steam powered Canal yacht, the Annie Laurie, named after his youngest daughter, which served as both a mascot for the brewery while also from time to time tugging ingredients to the brewery. Greenways continued operation till 1952, but the canalside brewery pictured here burnt down shortly before Prohibition. However brewing continues to this day on that site, with Talking Cursive Brewing Company located in the same spot on Erie Blvd. You can meet us at Talking Cursive on Saturday, June 7th, where we'll gather at 4 PM for the release of their new Albany Ale, called Lafayette's Farewell, commemorating the Marquis de Lafayette's farewell voyage through the US in 1824-25. You can come learn more about Lafayette's travels at the Erie Canal Museum earlier that day when we host Julien Icher, President of the Lafayette Trail, to speak on this history beginning at 3:00 PM on June 7th. For attendees of the talk, there will be a brief guided tour between the Erie Canal Museum and Talking Cursive Brewing Company, highlighting some stops relevant to the Marquis de Lafayette's stop in Syracuse.
