Junior League of Buffalo, Inc.
The Junior League of Buffalo, Inc. is a nonprofit women's volunteer organization dedicated to promoting positive change in the Western New York community. Established on June 5, 1919, it was founded by a group of sixty-seven women at the home of Mrs. Grace Millard Seymour H. Knox under the leadership of Mrs. Mary Crate Nelson Taylor[1].
Mission
The Junior League of Buffalo aligns with the broader mission of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI), which aims to advance women's leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training[2]. The organization's focus includes developing civic leadership skills among its members while addressing various community needs such as child welfare, education, and arts[4][5].
History
- 1919: The Junior League began as an initiative to rally women for community service. It has grown significantly since its inception, responding to diverse community needs and fostering voluntarism[1][4].
- 1920s: The League launched a Thrift Shop in 1921, obtained for $1 from the Red Cross. This shop, along with a food store on Allen Street, contributed to community welfare. Donations to Children’s Hospital amounted to $37,086, with a significant portion dedicated to establishing a dental clinic[1].
- 1930s: The League expanded its activities, providing transportation for visiting nurses and raising funds for area health clinics. Members also brought theater to schoolchildren, supporting educational entertainment[1].
- 1940s: The organization diversified its interests by supporting local artists at League Headquarters and launching a children’s radio series. In 1949, it contributed to the establishment of the Cerebral Palsy Young Adult Center, one of the first such centers in the country[1].
- 1950s: Focus on educational entertainment continued with puppetry and the Children’s Theater. The League opened a snack bar at the Children’s Hospital and raised funds for a pediatric cardiac department laboratory[1].
- 2000s: Initiatives included the Families United program to address substance abuse and HIV/AIDS among teen mothers. The League collaborated with community organizations like Child and Family Services and the Food Bank of Western New York[1].
Programs and Impact
The Junior League of Buffalo has contributed significantly to local causes through various programs:
- Familes United: A project focused on supporting families affected by substance abuse and HIV/AIDS.
- Decorators’ Show House: A major fundraising event that has supported numerous community projects[1].
