The Brotherhood Sister Sol Inc.
The Brotherhood Sister Sol Inc., commonly referred to as BroSis, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to social justice and youth development. Founded in 1995 by childhood friends Jason Warwin and Khary Lazarre-White, BroSis focuses on empowering Black and Latinx youth to build a more equitable future.
Mission
BroSis operates on a mission to educate, organize, and train young people to challenge inequity and champion opportunity. Their approach emphasizes unconditional love, around-the-clock support, and comprehensive programming, enabling Black and Latinx youth to explore their history, identity, and community to shape the future they envision.
Programs
The organization's programs are structured around three core components:
- Education: BroSis offers comprehensive educational initiatives to help young people develop a critical understanding of their history, identity, and role in society.
- Organizing: They foster a legacy of youth-led activism alongside members, alumni, and partners to realize a more just future.
- Training: BroSis provides innovative training models for educators and organizers, empowering them to inspire agents of change nationwide.
History
The organization was initially founded as "The Brotherhood" by Warwin and Lazarre-White while they were still seniors at Brown University. They initially worked with a group of young men at the John Hope Community Center in Providence. The program was later expanded to New York City in 1995 and eventually incorporated to include young women, adopting its current name, The Brotherhood Sister Sol, in 1998. Dr. Susan Wilcox joined as a co-executive director during this expansion and served for eight years. Today, Khary Lazarre-White serves as the sole executive director, overseeing an organization that has received national recognition for its model.
Financials and Assets
As of 2023, BroSis reported a revenue of $10.3 million, primarily from contributions, with expenses totaling $9.7 million. The organization's total assets stood at $26.8 million, while liabilities were $4.42 million. This financial stability underscores its commitment to providing extensive support services.
Impact
The Brotherhood Sister Sol has been recognized for its successful approach to youth development, with members consistently achieving higher outcomes compared to their peers. The organization's leadership has shared their expertise at various institutions, highlighting their impact in the field of social justice. BroSis continues to be a pivotal force in transforming lives and communities across the United States.
