Today, we honor one of those stories through the Katherine “Sissy” Wells Memorial Fund. Katherine “Sissy” Wells lived at 605 Main Street—then a hotel—when it was a very different time for LGBTQ+ individuals. In an era when transgender identities were rarely acknowledged or respected, Ms. Wells lived her truth with quiet strength. Her presence in this community was a powerful reminder of the resilience and beauty of those who came before us. Thanks to the generosity of Barbara Woike, a 1979 portrait of Ms. Wells will now hang permanently in our space, just steps from where she once called home. A second portrait will be displayed at the CNTR Community Center, ensuring her legacy continues to inspire across our city. We invite you to join us in celebrating her life and legacy at a special reception on Friday, June 6 from 5:30–6:30PM, on the eve of Middletown’s PrideFest.
