Overview
The Festival of New Trumpet Music Inc., also known as FONT Music, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating trumpet music in its diverse forms. Founded in 2003 by jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas, the organization aims to foster innovation and creativity in trumpet playing by providing a platform for emerging and established artists.
Mission
FONT Music seeks to showcase the versatility of the trumpet across multiple genres, including jazz, free jazz, classical, rock, and hip hop. Its mission is to nurture a community of musicians, students, and enthusiasts through various concerts, workshops, and educational events.
Events and Festivals
FONT Music hosts an annual festival, typically in September, which spans over a week and features a variety of performances and educational activities. The festival has expanded to include venues not only in New York City but also in Queens, Brooklyn, and Buffalo, New York. Educational Initiatives
FONT Music emphasizes education by organizing workshops and demonstrations, often partnering with various music schools and institutions. These initiatives provide opportunities for students and aspiring musicians to engage with experienced artists and learn about different musical styles.
Leadership and Governance
Dave Douglas directs FONT Music, which is overseen by an all-volunteer board consisting of renowned brass players. This governance structure allows the organization to stay connected to its artistic community while ensuring its philanthropic goals are met.
