As 2020 dawns, we’re looking forward to all the good we can do together in the Greater Glens Falls community. Last year, our 80th, the Glens Falls Foundation made more than $300,000 in grants to local charitable organizations and in scholarships for 73 local students. It was our privilege to help 17 local organizations with important health, education, cultural and environmental initiatives. In 2019, we again focused particular attention on programs that provide food, shelter and transportation for local children, seniors and families in need. Since 1962, the Greater Glens Falls Senior Citizens Center, Inc., has been housed in the stately home that Augustus Sherman built in 1844 at the corner of Glen Street and Sherman Avenue. You may know it by its Italianate Victorian architecture and distinctive cupola. Sherman is an important figure in Glens Falls history. He was a major Adirondack landowner and operated lumber and grist mills, a kiln, and canal boats on the Feeder Canal. He was president of the Glens Falls Paper Co. (a forerunner of International Paper Co.), Bald Mountain Lime Co. and First National Bank of Glens Falls. He was also was a director of Glens Falls Insurance Co. The Senior Center is in the midst of a capital campaign to restore and preserve this historic treasure. The Glens Falls Foundation is proud to support this effort with a $10,000 grant.
