NAACP Empowerment Programs is the 501(c)(3) charitable entity of the NAACP with a primary focus on training, education, and advocacy. Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's first and largest grassroots-based civil rights organization. Over 2,000 volunteer-run branches nationwide. http://www.naacp.org/ The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. NAACP Empowerment Programs will engage primarily in training, education, and advocacy, and will continue to work closely with NAACP units in these endeavors. This realignment will help us speak with a more powerful political voice and channel our resources more efficiently.

Today we honor the anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the first federal civil rights legislation passed since Reconstruction. This landmark law created the Civil Rights Division in the Department of Justice and gave the federal government authority to protect voting rights. It set the stage for future victories, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
