The sudden demise of Michael Sorkin has left a huge void in the architecture community at large. An architect, urbanist, writer, but more importantly a humanist, a mentor and a guide to many, Michael inspired practitioners to use architecture to develop a more socially just and equitable society. His deep awareness and critique of the political and social ramifications of his profession had made him a force to reckon with very early on in his career. Donning several hats, Michael served as Distinguished Professor and Director Emeritus of the Graduate Urban Design Program at City College of New York, founded Terreform (@terreformUR) a non-profit urban research and advocacy group and was the editor-in-chief of its publishing wing, Urban Research. His love for New York City, its dynamicity and resilience is well documented in the many books he had written, like Twenty Minutes in Manhattan, What Goes Up, All Over the Map. We join his close friends and family in honoring and remembering him. Our heartfelt condolences to the Sorkin family and his team and colleagues at CCNY and Terreform. Image courtesy: Terreform (fb)
