A living green wall is now on display in the Cohen Center for the Creative Arts! Green walls are vertical-built vegetation systems with irrigation, designed to bring nature into any space. The display contains eight types of herbs and was created by RCDS seniors Davis Clarke ’25 and Leo Roth ’25 as part of RCDS’s independent study program. In collaboration with Makerspace Director Kevin Farrant, Davis and Leo designed and fabricated the fully functional vertical green wall. To create this aesthetically pleasing self-sustaining system to house plants Leo and Davis drew inspiration from the hexagonal structures in beehives. Using Fusion 360 for precise CAD modeling, they employed a range of advanced fabrications techniques (3D printing, laser cutting, metal work, and woodworking joinery) to create custom-made components that replicate and assemble seamlessly. The wall also features a fully integrated water filtration and irrigation system for autonomous operation Spanning two semesters, the installation not only advances the school’s sustainability initiatives but also serves as an engaging teaching tool for Lower School science students studying plant biology, vegetation growth, garden ecology, and photosynthesis.
