The budget reconciliation bill passed by the House this morning includes new provisions that would deepen Medicaid cuts and create additional barriers to affordable health care. These changes will significantly hurt people with neuromuscular diseases and other disabilities. Proposed work requirements and more frequent eligibility checks will add burdensome paperwork requirements and time-consuming administrative hurdles that could cause eligible people to lose health coverage. Also, limiting federal support for state Medicaid programs and repealing consumer protections will affect everyone on Medicaid, both with and without disabilities. We believe these cuts will lead to many in the neuromuscular community losing access to vital health care – risking irreversible disease progression, loss of home and community-based services, higher out of pocket costs, & fewer options to seek health care – among further consequences. The bill is not yet law and the next step for this bill is to go to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
