As a not-for-profit, volunteer run, wildlife rehabilitation center, AFAS has given a second chance to hundreds of injured and orphaned wild ones since 1989.  Though its primary goal is to rehabilitate and release wildlife back into the wild, sometimes the injuries the wild ones sustain render them incapable of surviving in the wild.  If these handicapped individuals adjust well to life in captivity, they become part of our public education and/or surrogate program.  Every effort is made to provide these non-releasable wild ones with the care and surroundings in which THEY are comfortable, happy, and content.  It is our objective to enlighten the public and foster appreciation of our native wildlife through our educational on site tours in which the public has the opportunity to closely view the educational animals in natural settings.  Though people of all ages come here from different walks of life, they all take away the same things... a deeper respect and a new found compassion for wildlife.  Through sharing these delightful and fascinating wild ones with the public, they are able to teach what no words ever could and they rapidly change people's apprehensions to appreciation and misconceptions to understanding.  It is our hope that this experience will inspire our visitors to peacefully co-exist with their wild neighbors long after they've left the sanctuary.  Abbe-freeland provides a much needed public service to our community. We accept injured and orphaned wildlife 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are routinely contacted to provide emergency assistance for distressed wildlife.
