Accounting and Financial Women's Alliance
The Accounting and Financial Women's Alliance (AFWA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1938 with the mission to empower women in all fields of accounting and finance. It was originally known as the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA).
History
AFWA was established by Ida S. Broo, the first woman in Indiana to practice as a certified public accountant. Broo's pioneering efforts and challenges in the field motivated her to create an organization that would support and advance the careers of women in accounting and finance.
Mission
AFWA's primary goal is to enable women in accounting, financial, and related fields to achieve their full personal, professional, and economic potential and contribute to the future development of their profession. The organization promotes career optimization and life balance, enhancing the capabilities and contributions of both individuals and organizations.
Activities and Programs

Membership has been open to men since 1974, with over 4,000 members across more than 86 chapters in the United States. Members benefit from traditional professional society advantages, including continuing education opportunities, job referrals, and industry publications.
