Accounting and Financial Women's Alliance

The Accounting and Financial Women's Alliance (AFWA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1938 with the mission to empower women in all fields of accounting and finance. It was originally known as the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA).

History

AFWA was established by Ida S. Broo, the first woman in Indiana to practice as a certified public accountant. Broo's pioneering efforts and challenges in the field motivated her to create an organization that would support and advance the careers of women in accounting and finance.

Mission

AFWA's primary goal is to enable women in accounting, financial, and related fields to achieve their full personal, professional, and economic potential and contribute to the future development of their profession. The organization promotes career optimization and life balance, enhancing the capabilities and contributions of both individuals and organizations.

Activities and Programs
  • Professional Development: AFWA offers educational programs, networking opportunities, and leadership training, helping members advance their careers and develop essential skills.
  • Networking: Members can connect with successful, motivated, and influential professionals nationwide, creating a strong support system for women in the accounting and finance industry.
  • Scholarships: Through its foundation, AFWA provides scholarships to individuals pursuing careers in accounting and finance.
  • Women Who Count Awards: The organization recognizes women who lead with passion and integrity in accounting and finance.
  • Conferences: AFWA hosts conferences such as the Women Who Count Conference, offering opportunities for continuing professional education (CPE) credits and leadership training.
Membership

Membership has been open to men since 1974, with over 4,000 members across more than 86 chapters in the United States. Members benefit from traditional professional society advantages, including continuing education opportunities, job referrals, and industry publications.

Values

AFWA operates under the core values of empowerment, leadership, integrity, and passion, fostering an environment where women can excel in accounting and finance.

Legacy

Over its more than 80-year history, AFWA has evolved to meet the changing needs of women in accounting and finance, providing a platform for professional growth and mentorship.
