Pine Island Camp Inc
Pine Island Camp Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located on Pine Island in Great Pond, Maine. The camp has operated continuously since its founding in 1902, offering a unique summer experience focused on personal growth and development for boys aged 9 to 15. The organization is designed to foster independence, concern for others, honesty, generosity, humor, and joy in its campers.
Mission and Activities
The mission of Pine Island Camp is to provide an adventurous, happy, and safe summer environment where boys can develop these essential qualities. The camp emphasizes unplugged living, hands-on learning, and wilderness experiences, encouraging campers to explore their passions and develop new skills through free time and structured activities. Typically, campers participate in two two-hour activity periods daily, choosing from a variety of options such as arts, crafts, sports, and explorations.
Pine Island Camp is known for its small, close-knit community that allows every camper to feel valued and supported. The program includes wilderness trips across New England, fostering resilience and teamwork among participants. The camp also offers specialized programs like the Expedition Camp, designed for older boys to develop leadership skills.
History
Founded by Clarence Colby in 1902, the camp was later acquired by Dr. Eugene L. Swan in 1908, who expanded its programs focusing on outdoor adventures and unique traditions. The camp has remained family-run, with successive generations contributing to its mission and management. Over the years, Pine Island Camp has evolved into a not-for-profit organization, ensuring its operations are sustainable and accessible to a wider range of families.
Financial and Community Support
Pine Island Camp operates through a combination of tuition fees and donations. As a nonprofit, contributions to the camp are tax-deductible, helping bridge the gap between operating costs and camper fees. The organization provides scholarships to support families from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility. Additionally, Pine Island Camp offers various opportunities for volunteer work and community engagement, including the maintenance of its fleet of wooden boats.
Governance and Operations
Pine Island Camp is managed by a dedicated board of directors and staff, committed to maintaining the camp's values and traditions while ensuring its financial stability and future growth. The camp's governance structure supports a cohesive community environment, with a focus on environmental stewardship and responsible outdoor practices.

What are your favorite Pine Island memories? Without a doubt, some of them include the trips and expeditions you embarked on and how transformative they were. Outdoor adventures are integral to the PIC experience, and it’s out on trips that our campers and counselors push themselves outside their comfort zones and discover what they’re truly made of. And now we’re happy to announce an opportunity for our alumni to engage once again in this time-honored Pine Island tradition. Introducing Expedition Alumni: your chance to relive the magic of community building and personal development on Pine Island trips. Join Jono Bryant, longtime friend of PIC, and Pine Islanders from multiple decades on this unforgettable expedition to Belize from December 27th to January 4th! Many of you know Jono well from his time as a WFR instructor during Staff Week, but those meeting him for the first time are in for a treat! This exclusive alumni adventure for former PIC campers and staff members will take you deep into the heart of the Belizean jungle, where you’ll challenge yourself, forge new memories, and experience the beauty of the wilderness. With a combination of jungle survival training, rugged hiking, and river canoeing, this trip will epitomize the teamwork and resilience that Pine Island instilled in us all. While we value all our alums and the experiences they’ve had at camp, this trip is reserved for alumni (former campers and staff members) who are at least 21 years old. Alums of any gender are welcome to participate. Additional trip details are on our blog- link in bio #pineislandcamp #offthegrid #picinbelize (fb)

Who’s joining our Wilderness First Responder class in June? We host these trainings annually for our staff to ensure that they’re prepared for trip leading, but this year we’re also inviting Pine Island alumni and friends to join us! This is a terrific opportunity to refresh your skills, reconnect with camp, and spend time on our beautiful island. Details and registration information can be found via link in our bio. #pineislandcamp #mainesummercamp #mainesleepawaycamp #boyssummercamp #boyssleepawaycamp #benefitsofsummercamp #offthegrid #greatpondmaine #belgradelakes #WildernessFirstResponderClass #WFRclass (fb)
