Description

Fairview Public Library

The Fairview Public Library is a nonprofit organization designated as a 501(c)(3) entity, serving the purpose of educational, charitable, and literary pursuits[3]. It is based in New York and plays a crucial role in the local community by providing access to a wide range of resources and services.

History

The library was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1974 to serve the residents of the Town of Middletown. Initially, it operated in the renovated Fairview House, which was formerly the Arkville hotel built by Revolutionary War hero Noah Dimmick. The library shared space with the Erpf Catskill Cultural Center at this location. Its early leadership included notable figures such as Dawn Roadman, Margaret Gottfried, Ernest Hyatt, Peg Barnes, and Gary Atkin, who formed the first Board of Trustees. Cynthia Kehoe served as the first volunteer librarian, and Imogene (Jean) Patrick became the librarian in 1974, holding the position until 1983[1].

Development and Expansion

As the library grew, it outgrew its initial facility. In 1992, it acquired the Joseph Christian house on Walnut Street with support from the Allen-Heath Memorial Foundation of Chicago. A major renovation followed, adding new spaces such as the main stacks area, meeting room, and circulation desk, which was dedicated in August 1994. By 2015, the library further expanded its facilities with the assistance of a New York State Library Construction Grant, making it fully accessible by adding a ramp and a new entrance[1].

Services and Collections

Today, the Fairview Public Library offers a diverse collection of over 20,000 items, including books, media, and digital resources. It also provides essential services such as public access computers, fax, copy, and print facilities. The library serves as a community hub, promoting literacy, creativity, and educational opportunities for all ages.

Mission and Values

The mission of the Fairview Public Library is to serve as a community partner, fostering creativity and bringing people together through various programs and services. Its core values emphasize community engagement, education, and access to information[1].

Governance and Nonprofit Status

As a 501(c)(3) organization, the Fairview Public Library operates under a Board of Trustees and is subject to nonprofit regulations. This designation allows the library to engage in fundraising and accept donations to support its operations and expansion of services[3].
