Old Guard of the City of New York
The Old Guard of the City of New York is a patriotic organization of U.S. veterans established as a ceremonial unit in New York City. Formed in 1868, it is the result of merging two predecessor organizations: the New York Light Guard, founded in 1826 by Colonel William W. Tompkins, and the New York City Guard, established in 1833 by Captain William M. McArdle.
History
Both the New York Light Guard and the New York City Guard participated in the Civil War, with the former serving as Company "A" of the 71st Regiment and the latter as Company "C" of the 9th Regiment. After the Civil War, these veteran companies were incorporated as the Old Guard of the City of New York through state legislation in 1868. The organization received its current status as a Veteran Battalion of State Militia in 1882.
Historically, the Old Guard was headquartered in Manhattan at a building on West 91st Street from 1920 until it was sold in 2019. The group then relocated to Riverdale in the Bronx, where it currently operates. The Old Guard is known for its elaborate uniforms, including white coats with blue details and bearskin hats, and has participated in numerous civic events and parades throughout its history. A notable tradition is its Annual Military Ball, which had been held for over a century until it was paused but is set to resume.
Cultural Significance
The Old Guard maintains a significant collection of historical artifacts, including military memorabilia such as uniforms, muskets, and etchings from the Civil War era. The organization supports deployed soldiers and participates in various ceremonies and events. It is recognized for its ceremonial duties, often serving as an escort and guard at official functions.
Membership and Activities
Membership in the Old Guard has fluctuated over the years, having had approximately 200 members in the 1950s and currently standing at around 40. Despite the decline, efforts are being made to preserve the organization's traditions and to attract new members. The organization is part of The Centennial Legion of Historic Military Commands and continues to play a role in maintaining military traditions in New York.
The Old Guard's activities include educational initiatives and historical preservation efforts. Their headquarters houses extensive displays of historical items, providing a unique insight into New York's military past. The organization's commitment to veterans and military heritage contributes to its enduring presence in New York's cultural landscape.
