Viles Arboretum, A Free Botanical Garden in Augusta, Maine

Free to access - 6 miles of trails - dozens of botanical collections - visitor center - events-&more! The Arboretum was begun in the late 1970's by the Maine Forest Service on publicly owned land that had previously been farmed for many years. To ensure that the land would be maintained as an arboretum for all time, the State of Maine leased it to a nonprofit corporation, then known as Pine Tree State Arboretum, in 1982. Since then the now Viles Arboretum has gradually added to its collection of trees and shrubs and expanded its educational and community programs. It now boasts more than 600 trees and plants in 20 majorcollections along 5 miles of trail that are open to the public free of charge for nature study, hiking, cross country skiing and quiet reflection on the natural beauty of the landscape.
