It's Fun Fact Friday! The shingle style property located at 16 Fifth Avenue was a portion of Dr. John Clarke's extensive land holdings and was sold to William Wellington in 1869, who managed it until its sale to Harvey Traver in 1886. In 1902, the land was bought by Michael J. Fay, a meat merchant. Michael constructed 16 Fifth Avenue in 1903, but spent most of his period of ownership of the property living at 132 Spring Street with his family. Upon a move to Schenectady in 1906, the Fays sold the home to James A. Leary, who was a local politician and lawyer who had made his fortune through gambling at Saratoga Lake. Leary sold the property in 1907 to Harry P. Pendrick. Pendrick, a lawyer, lived with his wife at 16 Fifth Avenue until he died in 1926. After Pendrick's death, the home was conveyed to Loyal Norton. Loyal Norton's father, Loyal A. Norton Sr. was the vice president of E.D. Starbuck & Co., a large dry goods store on Broadway in Saratoga Springs, and Loyal Norton Jr. (1894–1935) was employed as a display manager at the store. He was married to Dorothy J. Norton (1897–1939), and the Nortons had one son, Edgar F. Norton. After Loyal's death in 1935, Dorothy and Edgar managed the property, with Edgar selling in 1948. 16 Fifth Avenue had many occupants through the second half of the 20th century, the majority being physicians and doctors. In 1995, the home underwent a renovation and an addition with its historic character in mind. (fb)
