OUR JUNE 14 PROGRAM! The CULINARY HISTORIANS OF SOCAL presents an illustrated lecture, “FINDING AFRICA IN YOUR PANTRY," with KIANO MOJU, author of “AFRiCALI: RECIPES FROM MY JIKONI," on Saturday, June 14, 10:30 a.m. Lecture is free, in person at the Los Angeles Central Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium, 630 W. Fifth St., LA, Calif. 90071. A book signing follows. Offered in conjunction with the Central Library’s June Jubilee and Juneteenth celebrations, cookbook author Kiano Moju showcases common African ingredients, many from Kenya’s culinary history, including influences of Arab traders who settled along the Swahili Coast, to today's shared international cuisine. Reservations are requested; link at: [http://eventbrite.com/.../kiano-moju-finding-africa-in...?](http://eventbrite.com/.../kiano-moju-finding-africa-in...?) The Presenter: Kiano was born in Oakland, California, to a Maasai-Kenyan mother and Nigerian father who both moved to the U.S. in their early adulthood. Her love for traditional foods of Africa stemmed from childhood summers on her grandparents’ ranch in Kenya. After graduating with a Masters of Publishing from the University of The Arts in London, she began her career in food media and launched her production company, Jikoni Studios, which has produced cooking videos and commercials for industry giants such as Food Network, Fox Studios, Tastemade, and the USDA. Kiano also founded the non-profit organization Jikoni Recipe Archive, a culinary beacon for African and Black cuisine that amplifies these food identities while preserving them for generations to come. Central Library parking: 524 South Flower Street Garage. Saturday $1 flat rate with validation (9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.). Take your parking ticket with you. Parking validation available at the library's Information Desk (first floor) by presenting a valid library card. (fb)

CHSC presents an illustrated lecture, “FINE DINING AT THE BOWLING ALLLEY: MIDCENTURY ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT," with preservationist, author and historian CHRIS NICHOLS, on Saturday, MAY 10, 10:30 a.m. Lecture is free, in person at the Los Angeles Central Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium, 630 W. Fifth St., LA, Calif. 90071, and is followed by a themed reception. During the 1950s, technological, social and design advancements allowed luxurious bowling centers to sprout up all across America. These atomic-age pleasure palaces, often referred to as the "country club of the people," featured amenities never before seen in the alleys of old: free child care, Las Vegas-style showrooms and even fine dining restaurants. Nichols looks into the design of the centers and examines the menus, chefs and rooms where you could enjoy steaks, frog legs and other fine dining at the bowling alley. Reservations are requested; link at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/chris-nichols-fine-dining-at-the-bowling-alley-tickets-1337322440419?aff=oddtdtcreator The Presenter: Chris Nichols is a longtime preservationist and senior editor at Los Angeles Magazine. For many years he worked with the Los Angeles Conservancy Modern Committee, serving a term as chairman of the group. In addition to creating tours, exhibitions, and lectures about historic Los Angeles, Nichols has advocated for endangered buildings all over Southern California including the Cinerama Dome and the world’s oldest McDonald’s in Downey. His books include “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” for Taschen and “The Leisure Architecture of Wayne McAllister.” He writes the “Ask Chris” column in Los Angeles Magazine and has served on the board of Hollywood Heritage. His latest book is “Bowlarama: The Architecture of Mid-Century Bowling.” Central Library parking: 524 South Flower Street Garage. Saturday $1 flat rate with validation (9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.). Take your parking ticket with you. Parking validation available at the library's Information Desk (first floor) by presenting a valid library card. Credit card or debit card payments can be made at the exit gates. Cash payments can only be made in machines at the P-1 level of the parking garage before returning to your car. (fb)
