Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity
Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, commonly referred to as Pi Kappa Alpha or PIKE, is a nonprofit organization and one of the largest international fraternal societies in the world. Founded on March 1, 1868, in Room 47 West Range at the University of Virginia, the fraternity was established by six men: Frederick Southgate Taylor, Littleton Waller Tazewell (Bradford), James Benjamin Sclater, Jr., Robertson Howard, Julian Edward Wood, and William Alexander[1][2].
History
The founding of Pi Kappa Alpha marked a significant departure from the common fraternal practices of the time by immediately prohibiting hazing or 'horseplay', focusing instead on creating a brotherhood based on "brotherly love and kind feeling"[1]. In its early years, the fraternity faced challenges, including the ban on secret societies by universities, which limited its growth. However, Pi Kappa Alpha expanded to other institutions, including Davidson College and William & Mary, forming its Beta and Gamma chapters[4].
A pivotal moment occurred in 1889 at the Hampden-Sydney Convention, where the fraternity was reorganized by men who came to be known as the Junior Founders: Theron Hall Rice, Howard Bell Arbuckle, Robert Adger Smythe, and John Shaw Foster. This restructuring helped stabilize the fraternity and facilitated its future growth[3][4]. Over the years, Pi Kappa Alpha has continued to expand, now boasting over 275,000 lifetime members and more than 220 active chapters across North America[1][5].
Mission and Values
Pi Kappa Alpha's mission is centered around developing men of integrity, intellect, and high moral character while fostering lifelong friendships. The fraternity emphasizes its core values of Truth, Love, and Friendship. Truth is upheld through honesty and integrity; Love is embodied in the brotherly affection and respect shown among members; and Friendship is nurtured through shared experiences and lifelong relationships[5].
Activities and Impact
Members of Pi Kappa Alpha are encouraged to engage in community service and philanthropy. Between 2014 and 2015, the fraternity raised over $2.125 million and contributed more than 300,000 hours to community service projects[1]. Pi Kappa Alpha also emphasizes personal growth and development through its programs and leadership initiatives.
Symbols and Traditions
The fraternity is recognized by its official symbols, including The Oak Tree, Shield & Diamond, and Dagger & Key. Its colors are Garnet & Gold, and its flower is the Lily of the Valley[5].
Prominent Members
Pi Kappa Alpha counts several notable figures among its members, including country singer Tim McGraw, actor Jim Parsons, and football coaches Dabo Swinney and Bobby Bowden[5].
