The Boston House: Hope and Healing for Children with Cancer

The Boston House, officially known as Children's Oncology Services of Massachusetts, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to serving as a home away from home for children with cancer and their families. Established in 1979, it provides no-cost, convenient accommodations in a safe and comfortable environment, supporting families while their children receive treatment at nearby medical facilities.

Mission and Services

The mission of The Boston House is to offer a supportive community to families facing childhood cancer and other life-threatening hematological illnesses. Located in Brookline, Massachusetts, it is within walking distance of Boston Children's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, making it an essential part of patients' overall care. The House accommodates up to 22 families each night, offering shared living spaces and more private options for those recovering from bone marrow or stem cell transplants.

Facilities and Accommodations

  • Main House: This historic Victorian mansion, built in 1868, has nine bedrooms that can accommodate up to four people per room, with shared bathrooms and common areas, including a fully equipped kitchen.
  • Transplant Recovery House (The Carriage House): Originally converted from an existing Carriage House in 1985, it provides seven studio apartments designed for families caring for children post-bone marrow or stem cell transplant. An additional expansion in 1994 added more studio apartments for transplant recovery.
  • Amenities: Families have access to free laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, a playroom, playground, and free parking for one car. Periodic dinners are provided by volunteers, enhancing the supportive community environment.

Funding and Operations

The Boston House is an independent, community-supported organization since ending its affiliation with Ronald McDonald House Charities in 2017. It relies on funding from local companies, organizations, foundations, and individual donors. The organization is overseen by a Board of Directors, which includes family members affected by childhood cancer, medical staff from partner hospitals, and community members. Over 100 volunteers assist daily, implementing projects and providing family support.

Recognition

The Boston House has received a 4/4 Star rating from Charity Navigator, reflecting its commitment to transparency and responsible financial management.

Partnerships and Community Support

The organization has received support from various partners, including the Ilene Beal Foundation, which has contributed to ground maintenance and sponsored events, as well as supporting a caregiver fund for families.
