It’s #foodwastepreventionweek so we wanted to highlight one of our lesser known programs here at UG - our “pig food”! 🐷 Some food we receive is not up to standard for human consumption (we only want to share high quality, tasty foods at our markets). Our team meticulously sorts food donations daily in our warehouse and anything that’s too far gone is “pigged” (that’s our made up term for putting food in a bin that will be donated to our pig farmers) Our compost bin is actually quite small because it only contains coffee, chocolate, and meats - the pigs get everything else! Last year, we diverted 51,683 pounds of food to our livestock farmer partners!! This is a very efficient and sustainable way to repurpose food that would otherwise go to waste and we’re so grateful to the farmers who find a home for this food.
